According to new bio, young Obama was an enthusiastic pot smoker
It’s not news that President Obama had dalliances with marijuana as a young man. He wrote candidly about it in his 1995 memoir, “Dreams from my Father.” And as a presidential candidate in 2007, then-Sen. Obama admitted that when he was a kid, “I inhaled frequently, that was the point.”
But according to David Maraniss’ forthcoming book, “Barack Obama: The Story” — excerpts of which were leaked online yesterday — the president’s adolescent drug use was more, shall we say, dedicated than previously thought.
“When you were with Barry and his pals, if you exhaled precious pakalolo (Hawaiian slang for marijuana, meaning ‘numbing tobacco’) instead of absorbing it fully into your lungs, you were assessed a penalty and your turn was skipped the next time the joint came around,” a source told Maraniss.
According to the book, “Barry and his pals” at Honolulu’s Punahou high school even had a name for their pot-smoking clique. The Choom Gang, they called themselves — choom being a verb meaning “to smoke marijuana” — and they traveled around in a VW bus dubbed the Choomwagon.
Hardly just a passive member of the Choom Gang, the president-to-be is even credited with starting a few pot-smoking trends among the group.
Obama, according to the book, originated the concept of “T.A.,” short for “total absorption,” which entailed holding in a hit of marijuana until no smoke came out. He also popularized a method he called “roof hits,” which involved the Choom Gang smoking in a car with the windows rolled up, and then, when the pot was finished, tilting their heads back and inhaling the remaining smoke billowing down from the ceiling.
Another inventive move by the young Obama was the “interception.”
“When a joint was making the rounds, he often elbowed his way in, out of turn, shouted ‘Intercepted!’ and took an extra hit,” a source explains in the book. “No one seemed to mind.”
Obama even acknowledged his reefer-addled buddies in a section of his senior yearbook in which students were encouraged to express thanks and define their high school experience.
“Thanks Tut, Gramps, Choom Gang and Ray for all the good times,” he wrote on his page.
Ray, according to Maraniss’ book — which is due out next month — was a “long-haired haole hippie” and a “dealer” who could always be counted on to “score quality weed.”
